内容記述 | I explore into the change of the business mind of the Peases of Darlington (North-East England) in the 19th century. Edward Pease, the father of English railway, was a thriving worsted manufacturer, practicing Puritanical esthetic work-ethic. At the age of 66, he retired and became a rentier. Then he got anxious to reserve his ‘family stock’. His son, Joseph Pease was an innovative entrepreneur. He was eager to catch every chance of getting money, sometimes behaving speculatively. He made Pease family a ‘local Zaibatsu’, the multilateral business body, investing in worsted manufacturing, railway, coal mining, iron ore mining, estate developing, engineering and so on. He was a great benefactor to the town of Darlington as well. Joseph’s son J. W. Pease was born with wealth and honor. He became a MP at the age of 37, and continued to be a MP for 35 years. He behaved as a paternalist to his local community and to the workers of his family business, but seldom visited business sites. He did not have the talent to manage multilateral business body during ‘the Great Depression’. Three companies with which he was concerned were suffering from continuing deficits. But J. W. Pease was very slow to intervene to redress the situation. So the main bank of the Pease family accumulated great debts. At last, it was forced to be liquidated and the Pease Zaibatsu collapsed. | |||||||||
