| 内容記述 | This paper focuses on Banana Yoshimotoʼs short story “Midori no Yubi.” This short story is not only important as a masterpiece written by Banana Yoshimoto, but because it deals with the relationship between human beings and nature, a theme that has been important to artists since the story was written. In previous studies, “Midori no Yubi” has been regarded as “a story of the protagonistʼs growth ［as］ triggered by the death of her grandmother.” However, this understanding overlooks the storyʼs various expressive devices or contrivances. Therefore, this paper has attempted to reread and present “Midori no Yubi” as a text. Chapter 1 presents the problematic concerns mentioned above after reviewing previous studies. The paper then analyzes the temporal structure of the text in Chapter 2 and decodes the relationship between the grandmother and the protagonist through the plants present in Chapter 3. In synthesizing these, Chapter 4, presents the point of life that the main character chooses, using the memory of the room left behind by her dying grandmother as a clue thereof. |
