| 内容記述 | The aim of this work is to investigate how the interpretation of a sentence where the linguistic form and its logical meaning do not correspond completely to each other. Linguistic expressions in general consist of form and meaning, and the logical meaning of a sentence should be a composed meaning of all the meanings of all the elements that form the sentence. We thus expect that the logical meaning of a sentence would reflect all the meanings of the elements. There, however, are some cases in which the relevant correspondence does not obtain. We present, as instances of those cases, negative indefinites and negation-related expressions in Spanish and Japanese, and show that the interpretational processes of those cases should be distinguished into, at least, two ways ; one is an interpretation directly derived from the logical meaning, which is derived on the basis of the syntactic structure, and the other is one pragmatically derived making use of its discourse context. By examining those interpretational processes in detail, language-particular properties in the two languages, as well as universal properties, are captured more clearly than generally assumed. |
