| 内容記述 | This paper shows how English-language newspapers can be used as “authentic materials” to teach newspaper English as a part of classroom activities. For the principal area of investigation, data drawn from FIFA World Cup 2014 will be employed; for the secondary area, data from Sochi Winter Olympics 2014 and other sources will be used. The main portion of the paper will be devoted to clarifying the register of newspaper English in sports articles, explaining the particular use of wording, rhyme, humor, metaphor, allusion, polysemy, and various abundant expressions in reference to the same proper nouns (athletes or groups) or verbs (what the athletes did). The rest of the paper examines the rhetoric of newspaper articles from the perspectives of conceptual (cognitive) metaphor, focusing mainly on orientational metaphor. Orientational metaphor is a metaphor in which concepts are related to each other in terms of spatial terms, as encoded in language (e.g. up—down, front—back). The paper concludes that various elaborate or poetic expressions and rhetorical devices are adopted in English-language newspapers to draw readers’ attention. What the students will learn through these studies will, hopefully, form the basis for better understanding of newspaper articles in other areas such as economics, politics, social issues, and arts, and also a better understanding of colloquial English expressions. | |||||
