内容記述 | In this seventh paper of the series "The Polysemous Organization of Japanese Verbs" the author deals with hakaru, harau, and ham. In this paper, he applies a new analytical technique of diachronic polysemy to the analyses of hakaru and harau. The polysemous meanings of these verbs are so divergent that they cannot be linguistically related either by semantic or cognitive relation if the analysis is carried out on the basis of synchrony. Here we need to introduce diachrony, that is, we have to take into consideration the oldest possible uses of the words from which the present-day uses of the words are diachronically derived. Saussure stressed the necessity of strict separation of synchrony and diachrony in the study of the present-day state of language. However, this paper tries to prove the necessity of taking a diachronic point of view in the study of some polysemous words. | |||||
