| 内容記述 | It is proposed that against the previous identification of the unit /~/ in Japanese phonology as a syllable by some researchers like Kindaichi (1967) and Yahagi (2002), it should be identified as a vowel phoneme consisting of the binary features [-consonantal, + syllabic, a high, βlow, γhard palatal, δsoft palatal, εround, -tense]. Identifying the unit as such a vowel phoneme would explain its combinatory possibilities with other phonemes and its distributional characteristics. The syllable makeup of a word containing the phoneme /~/ is also examined, the results of which reveal that the phoneme alone can constitute an independent syllable in the underlying phonological form and keep the status as a syllable through its derivation, or can merge and form a larger syllable with its immediately pre-positioned syllable on the way to its final output form. | |||||
