内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 This paper attempts to demonstrate the following: 1) the important role dime novels played in the early history of science fiction; 2) the way late 19th-century science fiction dime novels inflamed American jingoistic nationalism and served to strengthen white male-centered society; and 3) their influence on Mark Twain’snovels and stories in dime novels’ heyday. These three points will be proved by analyzing Edward S. Ellis’s The Steam Man of the Prairies(1868), the first science fiction dime novel, together with several works from the Frank Reade Library, the world’s first science fiction series in regular publication, as well as Twain’s A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court(1889), which has a 19th-century mechanic protagonist time-travel back to the court of King Arthur. The Frank Reade Library(1892―1898) was published by Frank Tousey, who was said to have “a flair for the dramatic, the lurid, and the sensational.” It consisted of 191 science fiction dime novels, mostly written by Luis P. Senarens under the pen name “Noname.” Frank Reade and Frank Reade, Jr., the principal characters of these books, appear as wonderful inventors, like Thomas Alva Edison, who represented America’s future economic growth. Inventing such novel vehicles as the Steam Man, the Steam Team, and the Electric Air Canoe, these inventor-protagonists make adventurous trips to the American West and other places. Their conquest of indigenous people and monetary success result from such “wonderful” adventures. Reflecting America’s positive attitude toward new technologies and imperialism, these jingoistic dime novels were widely read by young white males, thus helping place white males at the head of society. Amazing Stories, the first magazine devoted entirely to science fiction, attained exceptional popularity in 1926. Before this magazine came along, however, the Frank Reade dime novels, as well as such novels as The Steam Man of the Prairies and its imitative versions, were best sellers. Often reprinted and very popular, these science fiction dime novels abetted the growth of American nationalism and reinforced the white male-centered social structure. This study also confirms close similarities between these dime novels and Twain’s A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court.
