| 内容記述 | 毎年降積雪に見舞われる地域に暮らす人々にとって、「雪」とはどのような存在なのだろうか。本稿は、2007～2009 年長野県飯山市における、多雪環境下での暮らしについての聞き書きをもとに、二人の住民による口述資料を非文字資料として、人生の中で「雪」がどのような意味合いを持つのか考察することを目的とする。 一年を単位に循環する時間軸の視点から生活暦を捉えると、毎年巡り来る降積雪期に対して住民は、一年を俯瞰して年間の作業内容を配分し、生産性の最大化を図っていた（有馬2023a）。それに対して人生などの直進する時間軸では、「雪」はどのような存在であり、どのようなエピソードが記憶に残っているのだろうか。 本稿では、日本の中でも特に降積雪量が多く、特別豪雪地帯に指定されている飯山市において、長年「雪」に対応してきた二人の住民の聞き書きから、記憶の中の「雪」にまつわるエピソードをライフ・ヒストリー（生活個人史）として提示する。これまでの研究でライフ・ヒストリー法は、集落の複数の住民から聞き合わせて、全体を把握することに力点が置かれてきたが、あえて個人の主観にも注目して人生を捉えることを試みる。その際に、中野紀和（2003）が指摘したように、話者に対して、伝承母体の代表性を体現している面と、個人の意志をもって行動している主観的な面があることを分けて考察した。集落の伝承母体の体現者として「雪」に対応してきたエピソードからは、降積雪量の多い地域で生き抜くための民俗知識の具体的な様相を記録した。また「雪」に対する主観の変遷からは、人生の中でも時々の状況や生業に応じて「雪」への認識が変化していることが明らかになった。 |

| 内容記述 | What does snow mean to people living in areas where snow accumulates every year ? This paper aims to study the significance snow has to peopleʼs lives based not on written materials but on notes taken during interviews with two residents in Iiyama City, Nagano Prefecture, between 2007 and 2009. They talked about life in an environment with heavy snow. Reflecting on the calendar of peopleʼs lives using the axis of time flowing cyclically by the year, the residents tried to maximize their productivity by organizing tasks with the entire year in mind. They did so to prepare for the snowy season that never fails to arrive （Arima 2023a）. In contrast, another time axis proceeds in a linear way, and not in a cyclical pattern, such as oneʼs life. From this perspective, how do people view snow ? And what kind of episodes do their memories retain ? This paper presents anecdotal stories about snow as remembered by people in the format of life history, or individual biography, based on the narratives of two Iiyama residents who lived with snow for a long time. Located in an extremely snowy region in Japan, Iiyama is designated as a special heavy-snowfall area. In previous studies, the life history method would focus on grasping the entirety by compiling stories from numerous villagers. This paper, however, takes on the challenge of understanding life by looking at the subjective views of individuals as well. In doing so, the author separately considered the two aspects observed in the storytellers : the individual may represent regional traditions and at the same time adopt a subjective stance, acting according to their will, as pointed out by Nakano Kiwa （2003）. From episodes of coping with snow as persons who embody the village lore, the author recorded specific aspects of folklore knowledge of survival in a heavy-snowfall area. In addition, from changing subjective views on snow, this paper reveals that peopleʼs perceptions of snow vary during their lives, depending on circumstances and on how they make a living. |
