| 内容記述 | One of the recent trends of historiography of British Industrial Revolution is the inquiry into its intellectual background. The leader of this trend is Professor Joel Mokyr. In this paper I try to summarize his ‘Industrial Enlightenment’ thesis, and to give modification. Mokyr said ‘the techniques that came into use after 1750 were supported by broader and broader base in propositional（scientific） knowledge（’ Mokyr, 2002, p.33）. But this is not true. The outburst of technological innovations during the Industrial Revolution was given rise to by the engineers who came into being after about 1750 in Britain. These engineers grew out of artisans and were not scientists. They were good in transforming tacit knowledge of craftsmen into formal knowledge. After trained as apprentices they learned scientific methods and came to have scientific mindset, supported by so called ‘scientific enterprises’. So, they could give rise to a lot of technological innovations. In this sense, they were surely under the influence of ‘the Industrial Enlightenment’. Mokyr’s ‘Industrial Enlightenment’ thesis is , despite of the minor defect, as a whole, still valid and persuasive. |
