| 内容記述 | Among the different types of Japanese conditional protases, those ending with -ba, -tara, and -(no)nara differ not only in finiteness but also in the syntactic and semantic relation to their apodoses. This paper argues that conditional protases introduced by the -ba and -tara express a condition obtained in an imagined world, while conditional protases introduced by –(no)nara express an assumption that the speaker makes based on information available to her. The proposed analysis is different from the previous analyses in which the -(no)nara protasis refers to an established fact or a situation that is scheduled or predetermined to be soon realized, and the paper demonstrates that the protases introduced by -(no)nara crucially involves the speaker’s coordinate feature. It is suggested that having the speaker feature interfacing with the pragmatic information, the -(no)nara protasis forms a conditional sentence with syntactic and semantic characteristics that are parallel to those of the ‘epistemic conditionals’ in English. | |||||
