| 内容記述 | This study is based on the riddles in Zhonghua Mishu Jicheng 中華謎書集成（The collection of Chinese riddles）, with regards to the book Liaozhai Zhiyi （Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio）. The study, in the meantime, combines the reception of the drinking games and drama, to research and understand how Liaozhai Zhiyi was received during the Qing dynasty. The stories in Liaozhai Zhiyi can be divided into three main categories: “Extraordinary people and crazy events,” “Advise the good and punish the evil; point out the mistakes of the times as well as social problems, and persuade others to correct them,” and “Pretty women and the good wife.” These three categories were all quoted in the answers to these riddles, and there were no significant differences in the frequency of their occurrence. However, upon further subdividing these main categories, the story of the “Two Beauties” in the category of “Pretty women and the good wife” is generally favored more by the genre of popular literature than by others. The story of the “Two Beauties” mainly discusses a husband who has many beautiful wives. These stories were widely used in the riddles, drinking games, and dramas, reflecting the male-dominated, social characteristic of the Qing dynasty. Meanwhile, from the genre of popular literature, Liaozhai Zhiyi?s story of the “Two Beauties” should be more popular and familiar to readers than other stories in the same book. | |||||
