内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 Alberto Moravia, a twentieth-century Italian writer, is an important figure when we consider the representations concerning Rome, for he was born and lived in Rome and wrote many works whose background is set in this city. In one of his novels, La Romana, its narratorprotagonist who is typically Roman both in that she is a seventhgeneration Roman of the working classes and in that she is a prostitute, makes continuous reflections about the past happenings in her life. Her Romanness, which is notable in her thoughts and reflections, is represented in three aspects: her attitude toward society, her attitude about money, and her relation with God. Her attitude toward society is remarkable for its lack of social and economic ascension. She is without ambition to ascend the social ladders both before and after starting to work as a prostitute. Partly because of her lack in such ambition, she stays in the lowest rank of prostitutes and remains poor without attaining economic stability. She is noteworthy for lack of avarice in her work, and shows doubts about the essential goodness of money, sensing general sinfulness in its gaining. Her relation with God is conspicuous for the fact that her reward of repentance is neither apparent nor given in this world. Regarding all these three points, the narrator-protagonist of La Romana is an exact antithesis of the narrator-protagonist of Defoe’s Moll Flanders, an eighteenth-century novel which was set in the contemporary England and its American colonies and which Moravia had in mind when writing his novel of a twentieth-century Roman girl. Moll, a bigamist, concubine, thief and pickpocket who is remarkably avaricious with an excellent commercial sense, is rewarded with financial success and social ascension directly for her repentance after life of sin.
