They are aerial photographs of 8,000 individual villages taken from about 500 meters. I will arrange them systematically for the investigation of Japanese culture and society. This will be the first report on the study.\nJapan is a small country, but has various types of villages. These different types exist without becoming mixed. Rather than pointing out the types, I believe it is more important to see their relationships and the\nbalance between them. My ultimate goal is to make clear what the connections are.We find old villages that were established 600 years ago, but we can also find newer villages near them that have existed for just 150 \nyears. At first, I would like to look at the pictures of the 8,000 villages and classify them roughly by time and place.\nFor example, in Japan, it is the accepted opinion that some medieval customs and settlement styles remain in many small villages. In this country, small valleys are not only geographical features but also accumulations of old cultural styles. The most important questions to be asked are,  \"What is the relationship between valley villages themselves ?” and “What is their ralationship to plain field villages?”\nNext, I will choose a number of villages to do fieldwork in. I am gathering data about ordinary people - the environment and landscape by finding information on wind, clouds, forests, soil, field boundaries, and so on. Concerning the fieldwork, I would like to use maps known as “chisekizu,” compiled by public offices. They were made so that taxes could be collected properly. However, they do not always reflect village life because villages have their own boundaries for their lots, which are not always the same as the public ones. I want to see the differences in the position of boundaries, between the village ones and public ones.
