Over a period of 27 years, it ran 478 consecutive issues plus extras for a total of some 518 volumes.　The journal prominently featuring pictures and photographs ought to be a major source material of history and folklore studies covering the customs and mores of Japanese society in its early years of Westernization. Yet assessment is mixed and little research has been devoted to the publication.　This paper analyzes, interprets, and conducts a historical investigation of the assorted mores and minutiae of the Meiji period depicted in book illustrations, with a focus on the two-part special issue Shinsen Tokyo Saijiki. By drawing a comparison between the countless trifles portrayed and other literary and photographic references, it seeks to demonstrate that Fuzoku Gaho is a valid source material of the history and culture of everyday life in late 19th century Japan. 　An analysis of the fine details, other than the main subject matter, suggests that gestures and settings reflect the circumstances of the times. Moreover, it reveals what is not depicted. For instance, there are extremely few figures in Western attire. Writings on the altar lamp at a Buddhist temple or Shinto shrine do not appear in illustrations. And rickshaws, a means of transportation in holiday resorts, differ between pictures and photographs.　All of this demonstrates that the illustrator, Matsutani Shoun, modified his compositions for effect. One may conclude, however, that the details of his work are nevertheless a reflection of the times.　Certain minutiae are omitted for effect, and others are rendered so intricately that they have vanished in the printing process and are no longer visible. This much is beyond question.
