Using the Survey of English Place-Names of the two counties by the English Place-Name Society as a source, 336 examples are found:226 in Berkshire, 110 in Wiltshire. Broadly, they are classified into five categories: the place-names meaning “bright/ dark,” “wet/ dry,”\n“cold/ warm,” “summery/ wintry,” and “windy.” In terms of the ratio of occurrences, the place-names meaning “wet/ dry” are the largest both in the northern and the southern halves of Berkshire, but in Wiltshire, the place-names meaning “cold/ warm” are the largest in the northern half, and those of “summery/ wintry,” in the southern half. As for the place-names meaning “bright/ dark,” those etymologically originated in Old English sunne “sun,” deorc “dark,”and blind “dark” are newly discovered. In spite of the largest number of occurrences among the above five categories, almost 90 percent of the place-names meaning “wet/ dry” are the field-names, the lands which are not used as habitations.
