| 内容記述 | This paper explored the meaning and usage of ‘zai’ which is regarded as a progressive aspect marker in Mandarin Chainese. An image expressed by ‘zai’ consists of a number of same events. So sentences containing ‘zai’ must take durative verbs to indicate a progressive aspect. This paper also analyzed progressive aspects of ‘zai’ which are composed of two different parts of speech, namely, an adverb and a preposition. Thus ‘zai’ sentences can take either of the two forms illustrated in (a) and (b). (a) Ni zai zher deng wo. ‘You PRG here wait me’ ― “Wait here for me.” (b) Qianshaonainai zai xi yifu. ‘Ms. Qian PRG wash clothes’ ― “Ms. Qian is washing clothes.” Both forms use a progressive morpheme ‘zai’. In (a), ‘zai’ is followed by a place word ‘zher’. In (b), ‘zai’ is directly followed by a predicate “washing clothes”. In the latter case, the object of ‘zai’ is omitted, while implied semantically. When the object of ‘zai’ is omitted, the ‘zai’ as the first verb in verbal expressions in series is used like an adverb, but actually the ‘zai’ here is a first verb in a V－Vseries with an omitted object. |
