Subsequent to the 2013 decision to grant the 2020 Olympics to Tokyo, one sees almost daily reports in the media of foreign visitors to Japanese cities. To oneʼs eyes, sightseeing in Japan seems to have become a great boom. However, the reality is that Japan still ranks far behind in terms of international competitiveness as regards tourism. In endeavoring to make Japan more competitive in the world market, the Japanese government has announced various new strategies to achieve an increase of 20 million foreign visitors in 2020, and this would necessitate consistent effort on the part of all sectors of the tourism industry. Also, of importance for Japan is that awareness among general run of people of Japan to have a positive understanding and appreciation of the differences between peoples and cultures needs to be cultivated.
