In this essay I have attempted to analyze his poems with Venetian themes, in contrast to his prose writings that have Venice as their theme or as a background. I have also tried to place my analysis within a broader background of the images of this city evoked since the 18th century. Regnier's prose comprehends most of the important images of Venice since the 1700's, showing the city as symbolizing joy, tyranny, death, nostalgia, beauty, decadence, hauntedness, maziness, and as a haven from modernization. Naturally, in common with his prose works, Regnier's poems present most of the images which are also found in his prose : The city in his poetry, too, embodies joy, nostalgia, beauty, decadence, hauntedness, and labyrinth. The Venetian images in his poems, however, show two differences from those in his essays and stories. First, the poet Regnier is far more personal than Regnier, the prose writer. This difference is noticeable, among others, in the way he regards the city as a haven. Venice for the prose writer is a haven from modernization : \"Grace au ciel, Venise ne possede encore ni tramways, ni metropolitain et dans son noble silence on entend toujours sonner les cloches de ses campaniles qui n'annoncent pas encore l'heure de la modernisation.\" Venice for the poet Regnier, however, is a haven into which he escapes from his personal grief : \"Souvent, lorsque accable de quelque obscure peine/Je sens planer sur moi l'aile du noir chagrin, /J'evoque a mon esprit l'ile venitienne/Et je me refugie en son bosquet marin.\" In his poems he never treats Venice as a place for escape from modernization. This lack of social viewpoint in his Venetian poetry may also explain why there is no image of tyranny there. Second, whereas Regnier, the prose writer, emphasizes the livingness of Venice, Regnier, the poet, accepts the death of Venice. He wrote in one of his essays that \"Elle se repose de sa gloire dans le silence qui ajoute une beaute a sa beaute, et cette beaute n'est pas celle d'une morte\", thus breaking away from a nineteenth-century tradition that saw a beautiful death in this city. The poet Regnier, however, returns to this tradition which was started by Lord Byron, and writes : \"Cette Venise-la, que j'aime/D'un si minutieux amour, /A sa gondole pour trireme/Et sa clarte pour seul atour./... Mais pareille a l'Egyptienne/Un serpent l'a mordue au sein/... C'est une morte, mais son ombre/Hante encore les vieux palais.\" These nostalgic lines contrasting the past glory and the present death of Venice virtually paraphrase those written by the English poet : \"In Venice Tasso's echoes are no more, /And silent rows the songless Gondolier;/Her palaces are crumbling to the shore, /And Music meets not always now the ear : /Those days are gone-but Beauty still is here.\" Thus, Regnier's writing concerning Venice, with a little contradiction in poetry and prose, introduced French readers to almost all the important images of this city which had been handed down from the 18th century.","subitem_description_type":"Abstract"}]},"item_3_description_40":{"attribute_name":"資源タイプ","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_description":"Article","subitem_description_type":"Other"}]},"item_3_publisher_33":{"attribute_name":"出版者","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_publisher":"神奈川大学"}]},"item_3_source_id_10":{"attribute_name":"書誌レコードID","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_source_identifier":"AN00122854","subitem_source_identifier_type":"NCID"}]},"item_3_version_type_16":{"attribute_name":"著者版フラグ","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_version_resource":"http://purl.org/coar/version/c_970fb48d4fbd8a85","subitem_version_type":"VoR"}]},"item_creator":{"attribute_name":"著者","attribute_type":"creator","attribute_value_mlt":[{"creatorNames":[{"creatorName":"鳥越, 輝昭"}],"nameIdentifiers":[{}]},{"creatorNames":[{"creatorName":"Torigoe, Teruaki"}],"nameIdentifiers":[{}]}]},"item_files":{"attribute_name":"ファイル情報","attribute_type":"file","attribute_value_mlt":[{"accessrole":"open_date","date":[{"dateType":"Available","dateValue":"2018-11-19"}],"displaytype":"detail","filename":"kana-9-3-0001.pdf","filesize":[{"value":"4.4 MB"}],"format":"application/pdf","licensetype":"license_note","mimetype":"application/pdf","url":{"label":"kana-9-3-0001.pdf","url":"https://kanagawa-u.repo.nii.ac.jp/record/5763/files/kana-9-3-0001.pdf"},"version_id":"7954026c-ef0e-45f1-9144-edcc1ddf7402"}]},"item_keyword":{"attribute_name":"キーワード","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_subject":"Regnier","subitem_subject_scheme":"Other"},{"subitem_subject":"Venice","subitem_subject_scheme":"Other"},{"subitem_subject":"poetry","subitem_subject_scheme":"Other"}]},"item_language":{"attribute_name":"言語","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_language":"jpn"}]},"item_resource_type":{"attribute_name":"資源タイプ","attribute_value_mlt":[{"resourcetype":"departmental bulletin paper","resourceuri":"http://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_6501"}]},"item_title":"詩人レニエとヴェネツィア","item_titles":{"attribute_name":"タイトル","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_title":"詩人レニエとヴェネツィア"}]},"item_type_id":"3","owner":"1","path":["436"],"pubdate":{"attribute_name":"公開日","attribute_value":"2009-03-13"},"publish_date":"2009-03-13","publish_status":"0","recid":"5763","relation_version_is_last":true,"title":["詩人レニエとヴェネツィア"],"weko_creator_id":"1","weko_shared_id":-1},"updated":"2023-05-15T15:53:35.103072+00:00"}
