| 内容記述 | Though countless academic and non-academic writings on Kappa exist, most of them try to answer the question, “What is Kappa ?”, by merely referring to some fragments of information casually appearing in some types of literature including only a few lines in old dictionaries and miscellaneous essays composed mainly by literati in the post-Edo period. This style could be designated as an objective approach to the question, or one from the outside. Besides, the author of this particular paper would like to add another systematic approach from within, or attempt to grasp the essence of the topic, “What is Kappa ?”, directly through the analysis of the long history with full of ups and downs of the Shibues, who began worshipping Kappa in the north-western Kyushu, the Hizen and Higo Domains, to have been taking charge of it even up to the present time. This could be viewed as a subjective approach. This unique combination was facilitated by a 10-year long investigation of the voluminous literature that was long kept untouched by four families among the Shibues in the two Domains mentioned in the title. In Part 1, subtitled “Prolegomena”, the author first reviews the noted academic contention between YANAGITA Kunio, the founder of Japanʼs single-state folklore, and a then distinguished anthropologist (or comparative ethnologist), ISHIDA Eiichiro. Second, he goes back to the above-mentioned conventional approach form the outside to critically review it. Subsequently, he shifts to the main subject as below. The author hypothesizes that the Shibues built the “great tradition” of the proto-Kappa worship, possibly in the early Kamakura period, and it sequentially expediated the formation of several types of “little traditions” of it in various villages in the periphery, mostly in Western Japan, particularly Kyushu. |
