内容記述 This paper attempts to read André Gideʼs Paludes(1895) within the context of neuro-literature. This work has been positioned as a post-symbolist novel satirizing the closed and sterile exchanges of the symbolist literature scene, yet it presents a new mode of perception for the worldʼs sensations through neurotic representation.
First, the representation of the marsh in Paludes is positioned as a “soulless landscape,” an “insensate landscape” which is a stark counterpoint to the “landscape of the soul”(paysage d’âme). The significance of this landscape is examined through the concept of “contemplation.” For this analysis, we pay close attention to the differences and similarities between the protagonist Tityrus, and “I” as Paludes’s narrator and author of “Tityrusʼs story.” We suggest the potential inherent in a thoroughly prosaic landscape(a garden covered in rush grass and moss, an ordinary scene on a street corner, a moonlit night with no distinguishing features…) that seems to reject human meaning-making(Chapter 1).
Moreover, plants come to the fore in this landscape ; Gide is known as a writer with a botanistʼs eye. In Paludes, a parody of Virgilʼs Eclogue or an “anti-bucolic” story, we consider the meaning of the landscape where moss, aquatic plants, and even poisonous herbs appear, and that of the representation of plants itself. Gideʼs predilection for minor plants extends beyond a mere inclination toward the symbolist and decadent poetics which comprises using rare and flowery words. It reveals an admiration for plant life itself―that is, for beings dependent on their environment, living by “being immersed” in the world. This stems from a perspective that, through contemplation, perceives the seemingly monotonous natural world as shining with diversity.( Chapter 2)
Finally, we turn our attention to “contingency.” Gide, who had linked contingency to the plurality and diversity of the world in Cahiers dʼAndré Walter and adopted a stance of seeking truth beyond such phenomena, revisits the question of chance versus necessity in Paludes, which had the subtitle “Traité de la contingence” in its first edition. We examine the new position Gide adopts against the stance of viewing the world as reduced to symbols, drawing on the connections with landscapes and plants explored in the preceding two chapters. Through a different circuit―a vector of diffusion toward the diversity of a world brimming with chance events―rather than the vector of concentration leading from the phenomena of Symbolism to a single ideal, Gide sought to perceive “another truth.”( Chapter 3).
The question of “disponibilité (openness)” to the world relates to Gideʼs concepts of “freedom,” and, later, “the gratuitous act,” allowing us to confirm the broad scope of what neuro-literature brings.
