| 内容記述 | By interweaving three otherwise independent short stories into an ensemble narrative, Certain Women （2016） accentuates the pervasive sense of isolation experienced by its protagonists, rendering their solitude all the more palpable to the viewer. Christopher Blauvelt, Reichardtʼs long-time collaborator and cinematographer, repeatedly employs compositions that isolate a single figure within the frame, often emphasizing the claustrophobic tension of the frame-within-a-frame technique. These aesthetic choices serve to underscore, in visual terms, the womenʼs disconnection from their surrounding environments. Focusing primarily on the filmʼs third segment, this paper begins by identifying the aesthetic and thematic elements that permeate the entirety of the work, while also drawing comparisons with the original short stories. It then turns to an analysis of how the film articulates the possibility of connection and the faint glimmers of hope that emerge between otherwise isolated individuals. By examining both the specific predicaments each character faces and the fleeting moments of relational resonance that surface across the three narratives, this study seeks to reconsider how Reichardt directs her gaze toward the forms of solitude and vulnerability that remain incommunicable―singular and unshared―between characters. |
