| 内容記述 | Crustaceans such as shrimp and crabs shed their old exoskeletons by molting. The space between the old and new exoskeleton is filled with molting fluid, which is released to the outside during molting. In 2023, it was discovered that N -acetylglucosamine-6-phosphate (GlcNAc6P), a metabolite of chitin, was present at high concentrations in the molting fluid of the Chinese mitten crab (Eriocheir sinensis). GlcNAc6P was detected at high levels only during the pre-molt stage and shown to attract other crabs. These results suggest that GlcNAc6P released immediately after molting may act as an attractant pheromone, potentially triggering cannibalistic behavior. Cannibalism is a phenomenon observed not only in crabs, but also in many crustaceans, making its scientific study important. However, in Japan, E. sinensis is listed as an invasive alien species, making cannibalism research on this species legally challenging. Therefore, in this study, we investigated whether GlcNAc6P attracts other individuals in the native crab, the Japanese mitten crab (Eriocheir japonica). The results showed that juvenile crabs tended to stay longer on paper discs impregnated with GlcNAc6P. In addition, GlcNAc6P induced significant feeding behavior in E. japonica. These results suggest that GlcNAc6P may serve as a cue for cannibalism in E. japonica. This study demonstrates that the Japanese mitten crab can also be used as a model organism for further research on crustacean cannibalism. | |||||||||||||
