Because it did not fall within the framework of the “Soldier Trilogy”（“Wheat and Soldiers,” “Dirt and Soldiers,” and “Flowers and Soldiers”） that made Hino so famous, KantonShingunsho（Notes on the March to Guangdong） has had little opportunity to be examined in research history. However, KantonShingunsho（Notes on the March to Guangdong） was one of Ashihei Hinoʼs first serialized newspaper novels, written at the same time as “Hana to Hyo-tai,” and is an important work with many issues to examine, including not only aspects related to content but also the form of publication, its characteristics, and post-gun reception.
