Although there have been many previous studies on the history of theater in the Meiji era, most of them focused on individual theater artists, works, and performance tours. In contrast, this paper will focus on the discourse over the modernization or westernization of the theater. In Chapter 1, the aims of this paper are clarified through the review of previous studies on theater history and free theater in the Meiji era. In Chapters 2-4, the discourse of the theatrical world in the late Meiji era is surveyed and analysed by each divided period. In general, the new momentum of the theatrical world was discussed based on the organization to support Western plays as the first, the first publication of a theatrical magazine as the second, the new scripts as the third, the opening of the Imperial Theater as the fourth, and finally the rise of symbolic drama.
