The result show that many trainees recognize population-related problems such as depopulation, population decline, declining birthrate, and aging population as regional problems found in rural areas of Japan. On the other hand, there is a tendency to regard locations other than metropolitan areas as rural areas, and many trainees had vague geographical recognition. Moreover, some trainees equated the decrease in the number of farmers and aging of farmers with the aging of rural areas. From 2022, “geography” will be a compulsory subject in high school.
