| 内容記述 | This paper focuses on the question of “Associated Words(engo)” in Mallarmé’s Poetry, a rhetoric of Japanese traditional poem based on how words evoke additional meanings through homonymic associations. We examine whether we can apply the poetic of “associated words” to the sonnet «À la nue accablante tu...»(1894), famous for its difficult syntagmatic text. This poem’s subjects (shipwreck, abyss, siren, sea foam...) are associated with those of the experimental poem A Throw of Dice, marked by the themes of “chance” and “destiny”. For Mallarmé, the chance is firstly linguistic or poetic like a rhyme or associated words; it is therefore important to introduce the notion of “associated words” to this sonnet from the perspective of poetic analysis and philosophical inquiry. French thinkers and critics have proposed interpretations of Mallarmé in which we found a tendency to refuse “fiction”(mimesis, representation of referent) as a sign of modernism. In fact, Mallarmé put the notion of fiction at the center of his poetry as a human act of using the imagination to create. It is more important to discover the relationship between the referent and the symbolic sense than to note only the latter in an idealistic perspective. As an “explainer” of things in daily life(ornaments, flowers, conversations...), Mallarmé describes the relationship between them through language(Chap.1: Reality and Symbol). «À la nue accablante tu...» is divided into two parts: the first part (two quatrains) depicts the sighting of a trace of a shipwreck, while the second part(two tercets) suggests a drowned siren.
