The Association of Amami Expatriates in Brazil (Amamikai Brazil) is one such organization established in a country thatʼs the farthest from the immigrantsʼ hometown of Amami. This paper will take Amamikai Brazil as a case study in an attempt to shed light on the creation of this organization in Brazil, its approaches to passing on its culture to younger generations, and its eventual demise by analyzing photographs and video recordings taken in Brazil as well as interviews conducted there.  Brazil Amamikai is similar to other Amami expatriate associations in that its purpose of establishment, defined at the time of the establishment of its predecessor Amami Doshikai, was to promote friendship and bonding among its members. But it differed from many Amami compatriot associations in several aspects. For example, while Amamikai are typically small social units formed by a group of people from the same shima, or community, Amamikai Brazil was based on a larger framework, bringing together people from the whole of Amami regardless of their shima origin or whether they were from Amami Oshima or other islands. Also the distinct feature of Amamikai Brazil is that its primary purpose of establishment was changed to ‶building an assembly hall" when Amami Doshikai was transformed into Amamikai Brazil. The organization was created despite the presence of a group people opposed to the building of the assembly hall. It then raised funding for the hallʼs construction with help from their homeland, and aggressively pushed through the building project in defiance of opposition. Although the construction of the assembly hall was completed, Amamikai Brazil later split up and ownership of the building was transferred to another organization. The author of this paper succeeded in shedding light on the previously untold story of the creation and the demise of Amamikai Brazil through interviews in Brazil that revealed these details., Departmental Bulletin Paper, 論文}, pages = {153--182}, title = {ブラジルにおける奄美郷友会の研究}, year = {2020} }
