This is because folk culture maps were an essential means for developing shukenron, and the first fully fledged folk culture map in Japan was created for shuken-ron. The process through which shuken-ron was established after various trials and errors is also the process of how folk culture maps were refined as a methodology.　This paper traces the origins and development of shuken-ron in folklore studies―how it came to be presented and in what form. At the same time, the objective is to also clarify the process of　how folk culture maps were established from their relationship with shuken-ron. This can also be described as following the process of how folklore studies became established as a modern science in Japan in the 1930s. In other words, it is also related to exploring the source of modern folklore studies.　To be specific, this paper examines the process of how shuken-ron was presented in chronological order, primarily in relation to the research trend of linguistics, while also focusing on Okinawa and Europe as places that inspired Kunio Yanagita to formulate his theory of shuken-ron. 　As a result, it was found that Yanagita had conceived the idea of shuken-ron in Okinawa, based on the linguistic wave theory suggested by Johannes Schmidt, and that he had established this as a folkloristic theory after being influenced by linguistic geography, which he had encountered in Europe.　Furthermore, Yanagita had also used folk culture maps as an effective means in this process.
