Aizu Nousho (Aizu Agricultural Manual) was authored in 1684 (Jokyo 1) by Sase Yojiemon, leader of Makunouchi Village (current city of Aizuwakamatsu) located near the castle town of Wakamatsu in northeastern Japan. He described agricultural methods utilized in harmony with the nature of the Aizu region based primarily on his own experiences and the old custom of reporting experiments called “goudan.” This agricultural manual is of classic importance having been written 13 years earlier than Nogyo Zensho (Compendium on Agriculture), Japan’s prominent agriculture textbook published by Miyazaki Yasusada in 1697 (Genroku 10).  Originating as non-written cultural materials, “nousho” records centered on rice and field crop farming as well as farmers’ lives. But literate people helped develop these records into written cultural materials by handing down their agricultural knowledge in written form. Aizu Nousho deserves recognition as an example of how Sase Yojiemon, a man of letters, successfully transformed non-written materials, including agricultural methods and rituals, in the Aizu region during the mid-Edo period (late seventeenth century) into written forms.  Based on Aizu Nousho, this study aims to describe the shift from non-written to written forms with a focus on examples of wheat cultivation techniques and folklore. Even though wheat was one of Japan’s minor grains, it was cultivated across the country as the second major staple crop after rice. Wheat, also called a “cleaning crop,” was said to have properties that protected the fields against diseases and pests.  Aizu Nousho also mentions that planting tobacco on the harvested wheat fields helped protect against cutworms. It likewise includes many agricultural rituals related to wheat cultivation, including “mugi hokake,” or offering the first wheat ears to a deity. Similar types of rituals have been conducted until recent years in Saitama Prefecture in central Japan. Many customs involving wheat have also been observed in dietary practices and food processing. However, with more farmers abandoning wheat cultivation, agricultural methods and customs surrounding the grain are disappearing. In this respect, the historical and cultural values of “nousho,” written by farmers to pass down their knowledge, remain as important written cultural materials that evolved from non-written materials.","subitem_description_language":"en","subitem_description_type":"Abstract"}]},"item_3_description_5":{"attribute_name":"内容記述","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_description":"論文","subitem_description_language":"ja","subitem_description_type":"Other"}]},"item_3_publisher_33":{"attribute_name":"出版者","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_publisher":"神奈川大学日本常民文化研究所 非文字資料研究センター","subitem_publisher_language":"ja"}]},"item_3_source_id_10":{"attribute_name":"書誌レコードID","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_source_identifier":"AA12776889","subitem_source_identifier_type":"NCID"}]},"item_3_source_id_8":{"attribute_name":"ISSN","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_source_identifier":"2432-5481","subitem_source_identifier_type":"PISSN"}]},"item_3_version_type_16":{"attribute_name":"著者版フラグ","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_version_resource":"http://purl.org/coar/version/c_970fb48d4fbd8a85","subitem_version_type":"VoR"}]},"item_creator":{"attribute_name":"著者","attribute_type":"creator","attribute_value_mlt":[{"creatorNames":[{"creatorName":"佐々木, 長生","creatorNameLang":"ja"}]}]},"item_files":{"attribute_name":"ファイル情報","attribute_type":"file","attribute_value_mlt":[{"accessrole":"open_date","date":[{"dateType":"Available","dateValue":"2020-04-03"}],"displaytype":"detail","filename":"02 『会津農書』にみる麦の栽培と民俗 −非文字資料としての農書・風俗帳−.pdf","filesize":[{"value":"1.8 MB"}],"format":"application/pdf","licensetype":"license_note","mimetype":"application/pdf","url":{"label":"02 『会津農書』にみる麦の栽培と民俗 −非文字資料としての農書・風俗帳−","url":"https://kanagawa-u.repo.nii.ac.jp/record/12968/files/02 『会津農書』にみる麦の栽培と民俗 −非文字資料としての農書・風俗帳−.pdf"},"version_id":"b6662fd5-e1ec-4d9b-871b-422facaab171"}]},"item_language":{"attribute_name":"言語","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_language":"jpn"}]},"item_resource_type":{"attribute_name":"資源タイプ","attribute_value_mlt":[{"resourcetype":"departmental bulletin paper","resourceuri":"http://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_6501"}]},"item_title":"『会津農書』にみる麦の栽培と民俗 −非文字資料としての農書・風俗帳−","item_titles":{"attribute_name":"タイトル","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_title":"『会津農書』にみる麦の栽培と民俗 −非文字資料としての農書・風俗帳−","subitem_title_language":"ja"},{"subitem_title":"Wheat Cultivation and Folklore through “Aizu Nousho (Aizu Agricultural Manual)” Records on agriculture and customs as non-written cultural materials","subitem_title_language":"en"}]},"item_type_id":"3","owner":"10","path":["1256"],"pubdate":{"attribute_name":"PubDate","attribute_value":"2020-04-03"},"publish_date":"2020-04-03","publish_status":"0","recid":"12968","relation_version_is_last":true,"title":["『会津農書』にみる麦の栽培と民俗 −非文字資料としての農書・風俗帳−"],"weko_creator_id":"10","weko_shared_id":-1},"updated":"2023-12-11T07:24:22.424473+00:00"}
