| 内容記述 | This paper deals with English place-names containing Old English cald followed by nouns of water features such as springs, rivers, and streams. Examples are taken from the volumes of The Survey of English Place-Names published before 2011. As in Coldwell, the water feature is represented by one of such second elements as Old English wella, ea, bæð, broc, ford, s c, burna, mos, spring, lacu, wæter, fleot, pol, scor(a), stream, Old Nose kelda, bekkr, sík, mýrr, and Middle English ponde, combined with the first element cald. All the patterns of spellings of these place-names are listed alphabetically, with an indication of the source by the name of the county, the volume number, and the page number of The Survey of English Place-Names. It is worth noting that, of the second elements concerned, wella occurs predominantly; 299 examples out of 385. Field-names occur more frequently in names in which the second element can signify “spring,” rather than “river” or “stream.” This fact seems to imply that place-names of this kind may tell us that they are located in places usually perceived as “cold,” as well as the water available there can be “cold.” | |||||
