<dc:description>This paper focuses on the question of neurosis through the analysis of Jean Lorrainʼs Monsieur de Phocas（1901）, which was considered an exemplified “decadent novel of fin de siècle” for a long time. We first examined what is meant by “decadence,” an historical concept recently discussed and brushed up with reference to many domains, and formed a hypothesis that Monsieur de Phocas was a post-decadent novel, in the sense that the hero Phocas/Fréneuse tried to escape the closed world marked by vicious values proposed by Ethel.　We discussed the question of Phocas/Fréneuseʼs identity from a point of view of name/pseudonym, masculinity/femineity, and the double （as in Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde）（chapter 1: Confessions of a Mask）, the effect of “drogue” and “mask” in Fréneuseʼs neurotic spirit （chapter 2 : Aesthetic of Neurosis）. We passed to the question of the representation of what we call “deviant” and “perverse” sexualities in relation with the dichotomies of homosexuality/heterosexuality, sado-masochism, and activity/passivity（chapter 3: Deviant Sexualities?）, and the question of the form of neurotic perception of physical world, especially with strong sensations of artistic image as Ensor, Goya, and Gustave Moreau（chapter 4 : Nerve and Image）.</dc:description>
