          <datacite:description xml:lang="en" descriptionType="Abstract">In this paper, I focus on Shintoku Yamawakiʼs painting theory Danpen（fragments）.
　To understand the painter Shintoku Yamawaki and his painting theory Danpen（fragments）, it is necessary to take into account the state of the art scene at the end of the Meiji period.
　Shintoku Yamawaki won a prize at the third exhibition of the Ministry of Education for his work Railway Station in the Morning. Since then, Shintoku Yamawaki had come to be known as a Japanese Impressionist. Moreover, in 1911, Shintoku Yamawaki fought with Mokutaro Kinoshita in The Dispute over Pictorical Conventions. Shintoku Yamawaki wrote painting theory Danpen （fragments） as a rebuttal in The Dispute over Pictorical Conventions.
　In this paper, I examine the process by which Shintoku Yamawaki, who was regarded as a Japanese Impressionist, moved towards Fauvism and Expressionism through his painting theory Danpen（fragments）.</datacite:description>
